Shayla Shorter, PhD
Special Assistant Professor, Hofstra University, USA
Shayla Shorter received her PhD in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis from Emory University where she studied the impact of altered antigen binding on T cell anti-viral immune responses. After her graduate studies, Dr. Shorter was awarded an NIGMS/IRACDA Fellowship in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST)* postdoctoral award, which funds postdoctoral scholars to engage in bench research while receiving training in scientific teaching.
As a postdoctoral research fellow, she investigated the role of B cell specific epigenetic and transcriptional regulation in the development of human autoimmune disease. During her fellowship, Dr. Shorter also taught biology courses at local minority serving institutions in Atlanta, GA and engaged in scholarly research to understand how psycho-social factors influence students’ ability to deal with challenges and failures in STEM courses.
Dr. Shorter now serves as a Special Assistant Professor at Hofstra University, where she uses creative and evidence based pedagogy to teach students to think critically about science and the ways in which it impacts their world.
